Crooklets Beach, the main surf beach, is 800m up the coast. Northcott Mouth is 2km north, where the rusted ribs of the SS Belem emerge at low tide. Widemouth Bay - 4 miles south - has the longest sand on this stretch and a surf school for beginners. The 19th-century Bude Canal runs inland from the harbour for flat walking south towards Marhamchurch, and the South West Coast Path passes through in both directions. Stratton's 16th-century Tree Inn - Royalist HQ before the 1643 Battle of Stamford Hill, and birthplace of the Cornish Giant Anthony Payne - is a 10-minute walk inland.
