Porthcurno is the beach that makes people do a double-take - turquoise water this vivid shouldn’t exist in England, but here it is. Wedged between towering granite cliffs on Cornwall’s far west coast, this compact beach delivers Caribbean colours with a Cornish character.
The Minack Theatre sits on the cliff above, carved into the rock face - catch an evening performance and watch the sun set over the Atlantic as the actors perform below. The Telegraph Museum tells the story of the undersea cables that once connected Britain to the world from this very cove.
At low tide, the beach extends dramatically and you can pick your way around the rocks to the left towards neighbouring Pedn Vounder - check tide times before attempting this, as the route floods at mid-tide. The water is exceptionally clear, making Porthcurno one of Cornwall’s best snorkelling spots.
Parking is at the Porthcurno car park (TR19 6JX), around 200 metres from the beach with ANPR payment on exit. Public toilets and a seasonal cafe are near the beach entrance. RNLI lifeguards patrol from mid-May to late September. Dogs are banned from the beach between 15 May and 30 September, 10am to 6pm - outside these times they are welcome. The path from the car park is level, but the final descent to the sand is steep.
