Fistral is the beach that put British surfing on the map. Facing directly into the Atlantic, it picks up every swell going - from gentle summer rollers perfect for beginners to the heavy winter waves that draw experienced surfers from across Europe. Multiple surf schools operate from the beach year-round, and board and wetsuit hire is available from shops at the south end.
Boardmasters takes over every August - five days of pro surf competitions on the sand and music performances on the cliffs above Watergate Bay. Outside festival season, Fistral hosts national and international surf competitions throughout the year. The beach was the birthplace of competitive surfing in the UK, and it remains the default venue for British championships.
The south end of the beach, below the Headland Hotel, tends to be calmer and suits swimmers and families. The north end picks up more swell and is where most surfers head. At either end, rocky headlands and rock pools are worth exploring at low tide.
Rick Stein’s Fistral restaurant sits above the beach alongside several cafes and takeaway outlets. Public toilets with accessible and baby-changing facilities are near the main car park (20p, coin or contactless). The main beachfront car park is private and camera-controlled - council car parks at Belmont and Dane Road are cheaper alternatives, both within a 5-minute walk.
Dogs are welcome year-round with no seasonal restrictions - one of the few Newquay beaches that allows dogs in summer. RNLI lifeguards patrol daily from April to October, 10am to 6pm, with extended cover during school holidays.
