Tregurrian
Tregurrian is a small hamlet on the north Cornwall coast, about two miles north-northeast of Newquay. It sits just above Watergate Bay - a two-mile sweep of golden sand that was formerly known as Tregurrian Beach. The hamlet has a handful of properties and holiday lets but no shops or services of its own; it exists primarily as the residential fringe above one of Cornwall’s best-known surfing beaches.
Watergate Bay draws surfers year-round, with consistent Atlantic swells and enough space to absorb large crowds even in peak summer. Lifeguard cover operates during the main season, and surf schools run lessons from the beach. The bay is dog-friendly throughout the year. Beyond surfing, the beach is popular for kitesurfing, bodyboarding and long walks along the sand at low tide.
The Watergate Bay Hotel sits at the northern end of the beach, accompanied by several restaurants and cafes. Jamie Oliver’s Fifteen Cornwall operated here for years and helped establish the bay’s food reputation - the dining scene remains strong. Cornish wrestling tournaments were historically held in Tregurrian in the early 1900s, a reminder of the area’s sporting heritage.
The coast path runs along the clifftops above the bay, connecting south to Newquay and north toward Mawgan Porth and Bedruthan Steps. The walking is level enough in places for families, with dramatic cliff views throughout. Newquay Airport is roughly three miles to the south, making Tregurrian one of the most accessible coastal spots in Cornwall for visitors arriving by air.
