St Dominick
St Dominick is a village in East Cornwall, positioned in the Tamar Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty about two and a half miles east of Callington and five miles north of Saltash. The parish has a population of around 900 spread across several small settlements including Ashton, Bohetherick and Halton Quay.
The parish church was dedicated in 1259 to St Dominica, an Irish saint said to have sailed up the Tamar with her brother St Indract and founded a religious settlement near Halton Quay. In 1963 the dedication was extended to include St Dominic, founder of the Dominican order.
The National Trust’s Cotehele House lies to the north of the parish - a medieval manor with terraced gardens leading down to a quay on the Tamar. The privately owned Pentillie Estate sits to the south. Between the two, the valley’s orchards and woodland create some of the most rewarding walking in East Cornwall.
Plymouth is a short drive across the Tamar Bridge via Saltash. Callington, the nearest market town, is about four miles to the west. St Dominick works well for visitors interested in the Tamar Valley’s heritage and riverside landscapes, with easy access to both Cornwall’s rural interior and the city amenities of Plymouth.
