Gulval
Hillside village above Penzance
Gulval sits on the hillside about a mile northeast of Penzance, overlooking Mount’s Bay and St Michael’s Mount. The village has a medieval church - St Gulval’s, partly Norman with a 15th-century tower - and the Coldstreamer Inn, a pub with a beer garden that makes the most of the south-facing views. The position above Penzance gives the village an open feel, with most properties enjoying views across the bay or toward the farmland to the north.
Penzance is a short walk or drive downhill, with its promenade, the Jubilee Pool (an Art Deco lido on the seafront), shops, restaurants, and the harbour where ferries depart for the Isles of Scilly. St Michael’s Mount is about 3 miles east along the coast road - the tidal causeway from Marazion is accessible on foot at low tide. The village is also well placed for reaching the western tip of Cornwall: Land’s End is about 10 miles west, and the Minack Theatre at Porthcurno is roughly 9 miles.
Holiday properties in Gulval are a mix of cottages, converted barns, and modern houses, many with elevated views that take in the sweep of Mount’s Bay from Mousehole to the Lizard. The village offers a quieter alternative to staying in Penzance itself, with easier parking and less traffic noise. Newlyn, Cornwall’s largest working fishing port, is about 2 miles south along the coast and has several fish restaurants and the Newlyn Art Gallery.
