Dobwalls

Dobwalls is a village and civil parish in southeast Cornwall, situated about 3 miles west of Liskeard along the A38. The village gained a significant quality-of-life improvement when a bypass opened in December 2008, removing through traffic from the main street. That bypass includes two of the most elaborate bat bridges built in the UK, designed to guide greater horseshoe bats safely over the carriageway.

The village centre has a cluster of old cottages around the Highwayman pub, along with a small post office and local shops. Next to the pub, the Ancient Egyptian Centre houses an unexpected collection of Egyptian artefacts including mummified remains. Dobwalls was also home to Dobwalls Adventure Park, a miniature railway attraction founded in 1970 that drew families for over 35 years before closing in 2006.

Dobwalls sits at a useful crossroads for exploring both coasts and Bodmin Moor. Liskeard, with its mainline railway station and market-town facilities, is a short drive east. The fishing villages of Looe and Polperro on the south coast are around 20 minutes away, while Bodmin Moor’s open granite landscape begins just north of the village. Carnglaze Caverns and Golitha Falls - a series of cascades through ancient woodland on the River Fowey - are both within a few miles. The village’s inland position and good road connections make it a practical base for day trips across the eastern half of Cornwall.
