The Old Engine House

A converted tin-mining engine house at Tretoil near Lanhydrock, sleeping two in one bedroom with one bathroom. The building's tall chimney stack and stone walls give it more architectural character than a standard barn conversion - this is what a working part of Cornwall's industrial past looks like when it has been turned into a holiday let.

Inside, the cottage has an open fire in the sitting room. No wood burner - it is an open fire. Wi-Fi, parking, dishwasher, washing machine, and an enclosed garden are included. The garden is secure for two dogs. Changeover is Saturday.

Lanhydrock - the National Trust estate with its 50-room Victorian house, formal gardens, and estate parkland - is the closest major attraction. The Camel Trail starts at Bodmin, 5km away, for cycling the 17-mile route to Padstow. Cardinham Woods offers marked mountain bike trails and a cafe. The nearest beach is Carlyon Bay at 12km, with Charlestown's historic harbour a similar distance. The Eden Project is around 20 minutes by car.

Best for a couple who want a characterful inland base for exploring mid-Cornwall - Bodmin Moor, the Camel Trail, and the National Trust estates. Less good for those who want beach access within walking distance or easy reach of the coast.
