Cottage On The Square

Three-bedroom cottage on a market-town square in Camelford, the inland gateway to Bodmin Moor and a 10-minute drive from the slate cliffs at Trebarwith Strand. Sleeps a small family or two couples, and dogs are welcome. Parking on site - useful in a village where on-street spaces fill up in summer.

The cottage has both a wood burner and an open fire in the living rooms, which earns its keep from October through April. Kitchen runs to dishwasher and washing machine. Enclosed garden at the back. No wifi listed - bring a 4G dongle if you need to work.

Camelford itself has a Spar, a butcher, two pubs, and the Museum of Historic Cycling on the main street. Drive 5 miles north-west and you hit Trebarwith Strand - sand at low tide only, the Port William inn above the beach, and the coast path running 2 miles north to Tintagel Castle. Wadebridge and the Camel Trail to Padstow are 14 miles south. Port Isaac, Doc Martin's harbour, sits 8 miles down the coast.

Best for: walkers wanting Bodmin Moor on the doorstep and the coast within a short drive. Less good for: anyone needing wifi, a sea view, or to walk to the beach.
