The Minack Theatre

Theatres in porthcurno

Spectacular open-air theatre carved into the cliffs above Porthcurno.

The Minack Theatre is an open-air performance venue carved into the granite cliffs above Porthcurno Beach on Cornwall’s far western coast. Created by Rowena Cade from the 1930s onwards, largely by hand, the theatre is an extraordinary feat of vision and determination that has become one of the most celebrated outdoor stages in the world.

The auditorium descends in terraced rows towards a stage backed by the Atlantic Ocean, with views stretching to the Lizard on clear days. Performances take place against a natural backdrop of sea, sky and rocky coastline that no stage designer could replicate. The summer season runs from May to September, featuring a programme of plays, musicals, opera and comedy performed by both amateur and professional companies. Attending an evening performance as the sun sets behind the audience is a memorable experience.

Outside of performance times, the Minack is open to visitors as a garden and exhibition centre. The subtropical gardens, created by Rowena Cade and maintained since her death in 1983, cascade down the cliff terraces with exotic planting that flourishes in the mild coastal climate. An exhibition in the visitor centre tells the story of Cade’s extraordinary life and how she built the theatre over decades, hauling sand, cement and granite from the beach below. The Minack is a place where landscape, performance and one woman’s remarkable legacy converge.
