Theatres in Cornwall

Two theatres in Cornwall worth visiting - the Minack open-air theatre carved into the cliffs above Porthcurno, and Hall for Cornwall in Truro after a £26 million refurbishment.

Cornwall has two theatres that stand out clearly from the rest of the county’s entertainment offer - one for its building, and one for its setting.

The Minack Theatre sits on a clifftop above Porthcurno Beach near Land’s End. The auditorium is carved into the granite rock face, with tiered seating cut directly into the cliff and the stage positioned against an open view of the Atlantic. Rowena Cade began building it by hand in the 1930s and continued adding to it for decades. The theatre runs a full season from May to September with visiting companies performing drama, musicals, and opera. The audience sits on stone with cushions available to hire, and performances continue regardless of weather unless conditions are severe. The exhibition centre on site runs year-round.

Hall for Cornwall in Truro is the county’s largest indoor performance venue, seating 1,354 following a £26 million refurbishment. It hosts touring productions of West End musicals, comedy, opera, and classical concerts throughout the year. The building sits in central Truro near the cathedral and is the main venue for large-scale professional touring shows that reach the county.

The two venues are complementary rather than competing: the Minack is a destination in itself, worth visiting even on a non-performance day for the setting. Hall for Cornwall is where professional touring productions arrive in Cornwall.
