Porthpean

Porthpean - meaning “little cove” in Cornish - is a small coastal village in St Austell Bay, roughly two miles south of St Austell. The beach is a sheltered pocket of golden sand backed by steep, tree-topped cliffs, with clear water that draws comparisons to the Mediterranean on a calm day.

The cove faces east, making it well protected from the prevailing south-westerly winds. Kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding, windsurfing and snorkelling are all popular here. Rock pools to the west of the beach are good for crabbing, and the cliffs to the east support nesting seabirds. A seasonal cafe and shop operate during summer, along with public toilets. There are no lifeguards, but swimming conditions are generally safe. A dog ban applies between 10am and 6pm from 1 July to 31 August.

The South West Coast Path passes directly above the beach, and it is an easy walk east along the cliffs to the Georgian port of Charlestown - about 15 minutes on foot. Charlestown’s tall ship harbour and Shipwreck Museum make a natural day-trip pairing. To the west, the path continues toward Duporth and the wider St Austell Bay coastline.

Porthpean has a quieter, more local feel than neighbouring beaches. There is no large car park or commercial strip - just a small parking area above the beach and a residential lane leading down to the sand. For a family-friendly cove close to the amenities of St Austell but without the crowds, it is hard to beat.
