Germoe
Small farming village between Helston and Praa Sands
Germoe is a small village about 4 miles west of Helston, sitting on the south-facing slope of the Penwith hills above Mount’s Bay. The parish church of St Germoe has medieval origins and features a carved chair in the churchyard said to be associated with the Celtic saint Germoe, who is recorded in Cornish hagiography. The village is small with no pub or shop; Helston is the nearest town for services.
Praa Sands, a long south-facing sandy beach, is about 2 miles south - one of the better swimming beaches in this part of Cornwall and suitable for beginners at surfing. The village is also close to the western edge of the Lizard, with Porthleven about 5 miles south-east and Mullion about 8 miles south. Marazion and St Michael’s Mount are about 5 miles east.
The surrounding area is open farmland with some mining heritage - the western fringe of the Penwith mining landscape. Holiday properties around Germoe are typically in converted farm buildings with elevated views toward the coast and Mount’s Bay. It is a practical base for both the Lizard and far west Cornwall without the summer road congestion of the coastal villages.
