Carnon Downs

Great quiet place to stay close to Truro

Carnon Downs is a village 3 miles south of Truro on the A39 road to Falmouth. It sits at a useful midpoint between Cornwall’s only city and the Fal estuary, with the Pandora Inn at Restronguet Creek and National Trust’s Trelissick Garden both under 10 minutes away by car. The village itself is quiet and residential, with a garden centre, a pub and a campsite.

Things to Do

Trelissick Garden, about 2 miles south-east, has extensive grounds with exotic and rare plants, woodland walks and views down to the Fal estuary. The National Trust property includes a gallery, bookshop and a cafe in the courtyard. The Pandora Inn, a 13th-century pub on Restronguet Creek, serves fresh seafood and has a waterside pontoon where families go crabbing. The King Harry Ferry crosses the Fal a short distance downstream, connecting to the Roseland and St Mawes without the long drive around through Truro.

Where to Stay

Around 16 holiday properties are listed in the Carnon Downs area, mostly cottages and converted farmhouses. The village works well as a quieter, more affordable base for visiting Truro, Falmouth (8 miles south) and the Roseland. Pendennis Castle and Gyllyngvase Beach in Falmouth are within a 15-minute drive.
