Morwenstow is Cornwall's most northerly parish, set hard against the Devon border. The coast path here is raw and exposed - 100-metre cliffs with no crowds, very different from the tourist-heavy south coast. Duckpool Beach is 2.3km by car: a small shingle-and-sand bay at the foot of high cliffs, no facilities, good surf in the right swell. Sandymouth is 3.8km - wider, with a National Trust car park.

Morwenstow itself has the church of St Morwenna and a clifftop hut built from driftwood by the Victorian eccentric vicar R.S. Hawker - one of the more unusual heritage sites in Cornwall. Bude, with its larger beach and town amenities, is around 8km south.

Best for: dog owners and families wanting quiet, rural north Cornwall with wild coast path walks on the doorstep. Less good for: anyone without a car, or guests expecting village facilities - the nearest shop is in Kilkhampton, 5km away.
