Watergate Bay is a two-mile stretch of sand on Cornwall’s north coast, roughly three miles from Newquay. It’s best known for the Watergate Bay Hotel (home to the Extreme Academy for surfing, waveskiing, and kite-surfing) and its consistently good surf. The bay feels wilder and less developed than Newquay’s town beaches.
Why choose an apartment here
An apartment at Watergate Bay gives you space and independence in one of Cornwall’s most dramatic coastal settings. Self-catering means you can eat at your own pace - but with restaurants like The Beach Hut and Zacry’s right on the bay, you’ll want to eat out at least once.
What’s on the doorstep
- Surfing - the bay has consistent waves suitable for beginners and intermediates, with the Extreme Academy offering lessons
- Walking - the coast path runs along the clifftop in both directions, with routes to Mawgan Porth (south) and Porthcothan (north)
- Dining - The Beach Hut, Zacry’s, and the Watergate Bay Hotel restaurants are all within walking distance
- Newquay - a 5-minute drive for supermarkets, nightlife, and Newquay’s other beaches
Best time to visit
Watergate Bay is exposed to Atlantic swells, which makes it spectacular but also means it can be windy. Summer (June-September) offers the warmest weather and longest days. Spring and autumn bring quieter beaches and often excellent surf conditions.
