Hannafore Beach sits on the western side of Looe on Cornwall’s south coast, facing directly across to Looe Island (also known as St George’s Island). The shore here is predominantly rocky, with patches of coarse sand and shingle between the slate ledges. At low tide, an extensive reef of flat rock platforms and deep gullies opens up - one of the largest accessible rock-pooling areas in south-east Cornwall. The beach forms part of the Looe Voluntary Marine Conservation Area, which protects the rich intertidal habitat along this stretch of coastline.

Rock Pooling at Hannafore

Hannafore is widely regarded as one of the best rock-pooling sites in Cornwall. The reef structure - beds of flat slate separated by deep channels - creates sheltered pools that hold water even at the lowest tides. Species commonly spotted here include beadlet and snakelocks anemones, common starfish, shore crabs, hermit crabs, squat lobsters, and the Cornish suckerfish. Shanny and goby fish dart between the weed-covered rocks, while empty egg cases of the nursehound shark (known as mermaid’s purses) wash up regularly.

The best time to explore is during the hour before low tide, which gives roughly 2 hours of safe access before the water returns. A concrete path leads from the beach out among the rocks, making the lower shore accessible without scrambling over slippery surfaces. Spring tides expose the furthest pools, where sponges and sea squirts cling to the undersides of overhangs.

Looe Island and Boat Trips

Looe Island, the 9-hectare nature reserve visible from the beach, is managed by Cornwall Wildlife Trust. The island supports breeding colonies of great black-backed gulls and cormorants, along with a grey seal population that hauls out on the rocks below the cliffs. Boat trips to the island depart from Looe Harbour (not from Hannafore itself) and take around 20 minutes each way. Landing is tide-dependent - boats can access the island up to 2-3 hours either side of high tide in fair weather. Visitors typically get about 2 hours to walk the island’s trails.

Walking and the Coast Path

Hannafore sits on the South West Coast Path. A popular circular walk of 2.7 miles starts at Millpool Car Park in West Looe, follows Hannafore Road past the clock tower, and loops around Hannafore Point with views across to the island. For a longer route, the coast path continues east from Hannafore to Talland Bay (2.5 miles) and on to Polperro (5 miles total), passing through woodland and above quiet coves with relatively few steep sections compared to other stretches of the Cornish coast.

Parking, Facilities and Access

Free roadside parking is available along Marine Drive above the beach, though spaces fill quickly in summer. The nearest large car park is at Millpool in West Looe, roughly a 10-minute walk. Public toilets are located near the seafront, and two seasonal cafes operate close to the Coastguard hut. A putting green and tennis courts sit on the grass above the promenade. The promenade itself has benches spaced along its length and provides level access, though getting down to the rock pools requires navigating some uneven ground.

Dogs on Hannafore Beach

Hannafore is dog-friendly throughout the year with no seasonal restrictions - one of the few beaches in the Looe area that allows dogs in summer. The rocky terrain and shallow pools make it a good spot for dogs that enjoy water without strong currents. East Looe Beach, by contrast, has a dog ban from Easter to the end of September.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Hannafore Beach sandy? Hannafore is primarily a rocky beach with areas of coarse sand and shingle between the rock platforms. It is not a traditional sandy beach - the main draw is the extensive rock pools rather than sand.

Can you swim at Hannafore Beach? Swimming is possible at higher tides, though the rocky seabed means water shoes are advisable. The water is generally calm as the bay is partially sheltered. For sandy swimming, East Looe Beach on the opposite side of the river is a better option.

Is there parking at Hannafore Beach? Free roadside parking lines Marine Drive above the beach. Spaces are limited and fill up on busy days, so arriving before 10am in summer is worth planning for. Millpool Car Park in West Looe (pay and display) is a 10-minute walk if the seafront is full.

Are dogs allowed on Hannafore Beach? Yes. Dogs are welcome on Hannafore Beach all year round with no seasonal ban, unlike many other Cornwall beaches.

How do I get to Looe Island from Hannafore? You cannot access Looe Island directly from Hannafore Beach. Boat trips depart from Looe Harbour (East Looe side) and are operated by an authorised Cornwall Wildlife Trust boat service. Crossings run in fair weather when tides allow.
